Peer Support
Peer Support utilises the lived experience of its staff and volunteers to support client’s journeys through the service.
Clients who are accessing Talking Therapies in LMWS can benefit from short to medium term peer support in the following ways:
- Whilst they are waiting for therapy
- During therapy
- After therapy to attend groups in the wider community
This is a more informal relationship than one you may have with a therapist. We aim to pair clients with volunteers or workers who have had similar life or health experiences, and many people find they benefit from being able to talk to someone who can understand what they’re going through on a personal level.
The aim of Peer Support is to find ways to promote self-management and/or aid recovery through sharing experiences. This can either be with a worker or volunteer. Peer Support can be provided on a one-to-one basis either through face-to-face, telephone, or online platforms (such as Zoom). It can often be part of a wider support package at LMWS.
We can support you with therapy homework/questionnaires and accompany you to groups or activities. We develop relationships which are mutual and purposeful with a commitment over time between peer supporters and clients. All clients have different needs, so the support you receive will be determined by your individual circumstances.
Through a wide range of activities, we can support you in your journey to recovery e.g. improving your confidence and self-esteem, as well as providing encouragement to take part in social networks and activities. We can also help with more practical support such as attending appointments where appropriate.
How to access Peer Support
Peer support can only accept referrals from within LMWS.
If you are currently accessing the service or are on a waiting list, you may be eligible for peer support.
If you would like to access peer support as part of your support package, please discuss this with a member of staff involved in your care, who will be able to make a referral on your behalf.
If you have experience of mental health difficulties and are interested in supporting others by volunteering with us, please email lmwspeersupport@touchstonesupport.org.uk to request for more information or for an application pack.
