Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service (LMWS) is proud to be supporting Together Against Suicide, a campaign led by Leeds United and the Premier League to raise awareness of suicide prevention, encourage conversations about mental health, and ensure people know where to find support when they need it.
Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among men, yet many people continue to face barriers when it comes to talking about their mental health or seeking help. Through our ongoing work to reduce health inequalities across Leeds, LMWS is committed to reaching people in places where they feel comfortable, supported and connected to their communities.
Our involvement in this campaign builds on the partnership launched earlier this year between LMWS and Leeds United, which focuses on improving access to mental health support for men across the city. By working alongside one of Leeds' most recognised community organisations, we can help raise awareness of the support available and encourage more people to seek help before they reach crisis point.
As part of the campaign, LMWS colleagues will be joining activities throughout September, including matchday engagement and community outreach events. Working alongside partners including Samaritans, Shout, Leeds Mind and ANDYSMANCLUB, we will be sharing information, signposting support services and encouraging open conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.
Dylan Bhandal, Men's Health Advocate and Primary Care Mental Health Practitioner, said:
"It is important we as services meet people where they are, historically help seeking behaviours in Men have been known to be poor with suicide being the biggest killer of men 40+. Being able to share that joy for football and marry it with helping break the stigma around mental health felt really meaningful. Conversations and presence are so important to normalise thoughts around wellbeing and mental health. Leeds United and Premier League are doing something really meaningful in an authentic way; I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops further and encourage others to give it a go! The fans were warm and welcoming."
Jade Brown, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead at Leeds United Football Club, said:
"Our aim is for the Premier League's Together Against Suicide campaign to be meaningful, visible and impactful across our club and the wider community. We want to help make conversations about mental health and suicide easier, reduce stigma, and ensure people know where support is available. If this campaign encourages someone to seek support, sparks an important conversation, or helps save a life, then it will have made a real difference."
Leeds Mental Wellbeing Services will be at upcoming home games to provide support and support the campaign throughout the season.
