Finding strength in Community: Supporting Mental Health in Leeds

May 9, 2025

As we observe Mental Health Awareness Week globally from 12 – 18 May, this year’s theme reminds us of the importance of ‘Community’ in maintaining our mental wellbeing. The Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service recognises the profound impact that strong, supportive connections can have on our mental health. In an ever-evolving world that often feels isolating, fostering a sense of community is not just beneficial; it is necessary for our wellbeing.

Since the launch of the Health Equity Action Plan in 2023, the Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service has been putting efforts into making mental health resources and support accessible to everyone in our community.

Emilie Akselsen, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager at the Service, shares:

"A sense of community is essential to our wellbeing, both physically and mentally. We have learned that listening to and valuing diverse experiences from different communities strengthens our approach to mental health support. Together, we can highlight the vital role that community plays in uplifting individuals and in creating an inclusive service that welcomes all."
