Peer support
Peer support uses the lived experience of its staff and volunteers to support client’s journeys through the service.
Clients who are accessing Talking Therapies in LMWS can benefit from short to medium term peer support in the following ways:
- Whilst they are waiting for therapy – up to six sessions
- During therapy – up to six sessions
- After therapy to attend groups in the wider community – up to two sessions to offer signposting to further support
This is a more informal relationship than one you may have with a therapist. We aim to pair clients with volunteers or workers who have had similar life or health experiences, and many people find they benefit from being able to talk to someone who can understand what they’re going through on a personal level.
The aim of peer support is to find ways to promote self-management and aid recovery through sharing experiences. This can either be with a worker or volunteer. Peer Support can be provided on a one-to-one basis either through face-to-face, telephone, or online platforms (such as MS Teams). It can often be part of a wider support package at LMWS.
We can support you with therapy homework or questionnaires and introduce you to relevant groups or activities. We develop relationships which are mutual and purposeful with a commitment over time between peer supporters and clients. All clients have different needs, so the support you receive will be determined by your individual circumstances.
Through a person-centred approach we can support you in your journey to recovery. We can help improve your confidence, provide encouragement and help you prepare for and engage with therapy. We can if appropriate offer short term practical support.
